It was an honour to be contacted for a headshot photoshoot by the extremely talented and award-winning author Siobhan Fallon. I was excited to hear that she was completing her debut novel, after the success of her first published book, and needed an author’s portrait to be published on the book cover.

A headshot photoshoot by the extremely talented and award-winning author Siobhan Fallon

It was an extremely warm & humid late Summer session, but Siobhan kept cool, calm & collected… so professional; an easy headshot model.  We chatted easily throughout the session – which gave me a fascinating insight into the life of a writer – while we took a wander around together. I’d picked one of my favourite Abu Dhabi locations, the Heritage Village, offering so much variety in a relatively compact area. From natural textures with neutral tones like old stone and dried palm leaf walls… to the vibrant colours of lush bougainvillaea and the welcome shade of trees & gardens. Then a variety of carved & studded Arabic doors and Abu Dhabi’s National Theatre with its dome & stunning Islamic tiles. Lastly, braving the heat of the beach with its incredible Abu Dhabi skyline views. We achieved plenty of variety for her.

I hope you enjoy the portraits we created. It was a truly great pleasure meeting fellow creative Siobhan, and hearing about her writing exploits. It was super to focus on creating as much variety as possible to give her publishers a choice in the style of headshot. This is a great example of how you can utilise a relatively compact environment to the full by looking around you, changing angles and direction, discovering hidden corners & viewpoints by using your eyes – and your imagination. We may have suffered in the heat but the light quality was incredible – a photographer’s dream!

I loved every minute of this headshot challenge and Siobhan was a fantastic sport in ‘going with the flow’ and trusting my sometimes unconventional direction. I’m told that her publishers were very happy with the selection and spoilt for choice!

Please do check out Siobhan’s fascinating books – the details are below with links:

Author Siobhan Fallon has written a rich and authentic debut novel, “The Confusion of Languages, telling a heartbreaking story of the unpredictable path of friendship and the secrets kept in marriage, all set within the U.S. military community in Jordan during the rise of the Arab Spring in May 2011. Preceded by her award-winning short story collection, “You Know When the Men are Gone” which won the 2012 PEN Center USA Literary Award in Fiction, Ms. Fallon’s THE CONFUSION OF LANGUAGES vividly illuminates a world little known to most Americans—the personal lives of U.S. military families. In her new book, she writes from the perspective of American wives and their husbands stationed abroad rather than back home.

Formerly based in Abu Dhabi running my own photography business, I relocated back to my native England in the Summer of 2017. Now I’m based in beautiful Warwickshire, and I still specialise in natural light, on location lifestyle photography to capture love, light & life through my lens.

For me, photography is an essential way to preserve priceless memories and freeze moments in life. Time is all too fleeting and before we know it, the years pass by and we look back and wonder where the time went. We can’t stop time, but maybe – if I had a superpower – that is what I’d wish for.  Our best chance is to document our lives so we have a window into our past that we can visit whenever we like. I find so much joy in using my skills to create priceless memories for others. It challenges my mind and breathes energy into my soul.  I celebrate freezing those moments to capture not only the big picture but also the beautiful details and time-capsule minutiae, to celebrate the love and connections within family and kinship.
